Cover Reveal: THE REINTRODUCTION OF SAMMIE MORGAN by @Nancee_Cain #romance #series

Congratulations to the awesome Nancee Cain on her new cover and release! I love this series, and I like the sound of book #6.

Release Date: July 11, 2019

Cover Design: Shannon M. Lumetta

Synopsis

Still reeling from the tragic deaths of his wife and daughter, Matt Tyler trudges through life, caring for his young son, managing his cantankerous father, and working as much as he can. Despite his best efforts, bills are piling up and his vindictive in-laws seem determined to take Luke away from him.

Things change when he stumbles upon Sammie Morgan—with a car that won’t run and her mother’s ashes in the backseat. Best friends growing up, Matt and Sammie have spent years apart following very different paths. Now they’ve both run out of options. Without a dime in her pocket, Sammie has nowhere to go. And Matt lacks the stable home life he needs to fight his former in-laws.

Their hasty solution? A marriage of convenience.

But how convenient will this reintroduction be if it means Matt and Sammie have to relive the most painful parts of their past?

Goodreads

Excerpt

“Would you like Sammie to stay here?” Matt asked his son.

Luke continued to pet the cat, whose tail was now flicking. “Sure. She makes good pancakes. Is she your girlfriend?”

“I, uh, guess you’d call her that.” Matt stayed his hand, and the cat jumped off the step with an agitated tail swish. Rufus picked up his head but soon returned to his nap.

“I have two girlfriends: Angela and Kenzie.” Luke turned his attention to his trucks.

“Two, huh? That could cause you a heap of hurt, son.”

“Nah, Pa told me it was good not to get tied down to just one girl. He calls it playing the field. Girls are all the same anyways.”

Great, Pa’s offering dating advice to my four-year-old. “No, they’re not. They’re like flowers—kinda the same but different. And you need to handle ’em gently.”

“What do you mean?”

“You don’t want to hurt their feelings.”

“What kind of flower was Mommy?”

Memories of Karen flashed like a newsreel—laughing at the dinner table, crying when Elizabeth started school, playing in her parents’ pool with the kids, and holed up in a dark room not talking.

“Mommy was an orchid. She was beautiful but had to be handled with care.”

“Lizbeth?”

“I’d say she was a daisy, bright and cheerful.”

“What about Sammie?”

“Sammie’s a sunflower. She strong and a survivor. The point is, they’re all flowers, all beautiful in their own way, and you have to take care of them differently. So be careful with Angela and Kenzie. Okay? You don’t want to hurt their feelings. And really? Being friends is a lot easier than dealing with girlfriends. Trust me on that one.”

“Okay.”

“Anyway, Sammie’s gonna stay here and help me take care of you.”

“Like Mommy?”

Guilt engulfed him. Oh shit. What’s gonna happen to Luke if Sam leaves? What if this doesn’t work out?

“Uh, kind of, yes. You know your mother loved you more than anything in this world, right?”

Luke gazed up at him and smiled. “She loved me lots and lots. Lizbeth did, too. Even when I went in her room.”

Matt blinked back tears. In the midst of the epic fights that used to spring up between his children, he never once thought, I’ll miss this pandemonium. But he did. Every damn day. The house was too quiet without his daughter.

As if sensing his mood, Luke stopped playing and crawled into his lap, hugging him. “Don’t be sad, Daddy. Sammie will take care of you, too.”

“Okay.” He smiled against his son’s hair and held him for a few minutes longer.

#IWSG The Power of Language and New Anthology

Ho hey, it’s MAY! My favorite season of summer is upon us, and I can’t wait to swim in the sunshine and absorb vitamin D.

Just yesterday, Dancing Lemur Press released the latest IWSG anthology, Masquerade: Oddly Suited. I’m delighted to join nine authors penning short stories. Check out all of the blogs to read blurbs and learn more about these diverse, engaging characters!

Thanks to Alex Cavanaugh for starting this awesome support group. Sign up HERE.

IWSG Day Question:
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

Wow, this question provokes thought. One time that stands out for me is when I learned to be a therapist in grad school. I remember my supervisors teaching me the importance of language for accurate listening and building rapport with my clients. I learned to use the same words as my clients–if they say, “That pissed me off!” then I reply, “You were pissed off.” But I also developed the skill of listening to the unsaid words, empathizing with something like, “Underneath your anger is a deep sense of hurt.”

Thank you to the awesome co-hosts for the May 1 posting of the IWSG:

❤️Who can help her through a meltdown on the pitcher’s mound? ❤️

Fast-pitch softball is Andie Wilson’s life. She’s a fierce pitcher hoping to score a college scholarship, and she hates the annoying distraction of cocky baseball players crashing her high-school charity game. But she doesn’t anticipate the impact of one baseball player: Colt Turner. As Colt stares at her through his catcher’s mask, his steadfast gaze may be just what she needs to guide her through a crisis. And Colt may need Andie, too—to cope with the secret hiding behind his mask.

Thank you to author Elizabeth Mueller for creating this visual of baseball catcher, Colt!

Masquerade Oddly Suited Ball Bloghop: Afternoon at Upshur Estate #MasqueradeOddlySuited #newrelease #shortstory #anthology

Welcome to the Masquerade Oddly Suited Ball Bloghop!

Today I host one of the authors of the upcoming Insecure Writers Support Group anthology, Masquerade: Oddly Suited

I’m keeping my guest anonymous as this is the masked part of the blogshop. Authors will unmask their character on April 30th when our book releases.

Here are fun facts about our mystery author:

“Much of my writing, particularly what I consider my best writing, comes during the witching hour and graveyard shift. At one point in the past, I had an inverted sleep schedule, and would be writing while most of the world was sound asleep.

There are certain bands and musical eras I originally only listened to as a matter-of-fact writing soundtrack, but which quickly became almost mandatory for me to write with inspiration and passion.

I’ve been with many of my characters since we were very young. I like to say we grew up together. Knowing them inside and out for so many years, and maturing alongside them, does wonders for giving them greater depth and knowing exactly how they tick.”

Add the anthology to your Goodreads shelf! And you can pre-order on Amazon and other sites.

Elizabeth Mueller, author of The Cog Prince in the anthology, created this beautiful masked illustration of my anonymous guest’s main character.

Want to see the unmasked image? (I do!) Check out all of the authors’ blogs on April 30, the release date for the anthology.

Here’s a sneak peek teaser, which you won’t find in the anthology.

Afternoon at Upshur Estate
“Miss Wildblood, your gentleman friend has come to call on you.”
Jinx put down her well-worn book at the sound of Mrs. Upshur’s voice invading the library, though her younger sister Myrina continued reading Volume Eight of The Life and Times of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.  Mrs. Upshur turned white when she saw what her younger charge was reading.
“Where did that obscene book originate?” Mrs. Upshur asked.
“Our house,” Myrina said. “Our parents have a lot of interesting books they let us read.  I won’t scandalize you by naming some of the others.  When we go to church, the minister never feels the need to tailor his sermon to juvenile congregants in attendance.  Why should a book be any different?”
Mrs. Upshur grimaced and turned to Jinx. “Mr. Strangeways should like to ride horses with you, Miss Wildblood, but I told him ‘twould be far more respectable to walk with you around the grounds.  I do not need to be told to ascertain you do not ride horses in the most decorous way for a lady, and I do not wish to encourage that.”
“You mean sidesaddle?” Jinx asked. “I grew up on a farm, not an estate.  You’re talking to the wrong lady if you expect me to ride like you.  Everyone has her own version of normal, and this is mine.” She smiled when Felix entered the library, dressed in a pale yellow suit.
Felix returned the smile. “I hope I didn’t call at an inopportune hour and interrupt you.”
“You have much to learn about calling etiquette,” Mrs. Upshur lectured.
Jinx ignored this lecture from her summer chaperone. “I was only reading Thomas Blount’s Glossographiafor the umpteenth time.  This book’s over a century old, and full of obscure words I love finding a chance to use in my school compositions.  How many people know and use words like celeripedean, rhedarious, murklins, gardeviance, and tragematopolist?”
“Nobody should, least of all not a lady.” Mrs. Upshur grimaced at the offending book. “You must not endeavor to unsex yourself.”
“With all due respect, I’m not sure I believe in the concept of unsexing.” Jinx stood up and gave Felix her arm. “We’ll return before supper.”
“You most certainly shall, or such an unsupervised meeting shan’t come again soon.”
Jinx led Felix out of the library, down the main hall of the first floor, and into a large gala hall which look out onto the garden through central apse glass doors. A young slave in a dark pink dress and an older, tall slave in a pale green suit stopped their animated conversation on a recent scandal with another house slave and opened the doors.
“How long did it take to get used to this cavernous estate?” Felix asked on their way to the stables. “I imagine this is much larger than either of your other residences.”
“I dislike all the unnecessary space, but it’s not my home to dictate rules for.” Jinx opened the stable door and walked to a spotted horse. “This is my favorite, though no one can take the place of Xanthos and Balios at home.”
“Named after the immortal horses of Achilles I presume?”
“Who else?” Jinx smiled at Felix as he helped her onto the horse. “Are you able to stay to supper?”
“Now that you mention it, I certainly am.” Felix climbed onto a white horse. “I insist you honor my lodgings with your presence next time.  But for now, all we need to do is enjoy the ride.”
And so they did.

#IWSG Release Date Nears #MasqueradeOddlySuited #shortstory #anthology

Welcome to our writerly support group. We share hopes and fears the first Wednesday of every month. Bunny hop over to Alex Cavanaugh’s blog to sign up.

Thanks to our co-hosts for April:

As one of ten authors with short stories in the Masquerade: Oddly Suited IWSG anthology, I’m psyched about the release date in less than one month. April 30, baby!

Add the anthology to your Goodreads shelf. And you can pre-order on Amazon and other sites.

Author Elizabeth Mueller has created gorgeous masked and unmasked images of our characters that we will reveal as the release date approaches.

We also wrote 600-word teasers with our short-story characters. My baseball catcher, Colt, picks up softball pitcher, Andie, for a high-school party in my teaser, Get Your Own Girlfriend. Carrie-Anne Brownian’s blog will feature my masked image and teaser on 4.25.19.

Happy writing!

New Release: THE REINVENTION OF JINX HOWELL #5star #review

Title: The Reinvention of Jinx Howell
Series: Pine Bluff #5
Author: Nancee Cain
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: February 22, 2019

Hiding behind her wigs and heavy makeup, Jinx Howell masks her insecurities—which even she doesn’t understand—with bravado, slashing through life with reckless abandon. Lonely, but unwilling to get close to anyone, she finds the ideal solution: a hook-up with the campus’s most notorious heartbreaker.
In similar fashion, Mark “Two-Time” MacGregor protects his heart and keeps himself unencumbered through a string of one-night stands. A chance meeting with the edgy Jinx in a dark alley seems like destiny. She claims to want sex with no ties, making her perfect. Like attracts like. But this girl with a switchblade has more hang-ups than he does, which is a hell of a lot. When tragedy strikes, Mark’s hit-and-run lifestyle takes a backseat to his need to protect the broken girl whose secrets are unraveling. Along the way, both of them will find their truths unmasked. Can they forge a real relationship, or will they give up on their romance as jinxed?

Here’s my review! I loved it.

The Reinvention of Jinx Howell (A Pine Bluff Novel, #5)The Reinvention of Jinx Howell by Nancee Cain
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pixie Addict Meets Codependent Scot

This series is full of damaged souls trying to find love, and in the fifth novel, petite blond artist with a horrible family secret, Jinx, makes grieving bartender/accountant, Mark, rethink his two-timing ways. The addict and her codependent lover both reinvent themselves in the Southern setting.

The winding path of Jinx and Mark’s relationship is one step forward, five steps back. At times their misconnections are frustrating, though they are quite realistic. But the depth of feeling and understanding between them keeps them going, leading the reader to cheer for their triumphs.

It was amusing when Jinx’s big dog, Winston, rushes in to save her in the midst of rough sex with Mark. When her tears surprise her afterwards, Mark tells her,

It’s normal. Tears and orgasms, sometimes laughter–they’re great tension relievers. You’ve been through hell the past few days. You’re okay. Trust me.”

Mark really wants to help Jinx, but saying words like these can’t heal her. Her trust has been shot to hell by a childhood trauma (that she doesn’t fully remember), and in no way does she believe that she is okay.

Nancee Cain’s writing keeps getting better. I loved phrases like The suffocating civility between them was like a blackout shade on the light of their true emotions. Here, Mark muses about the push/pull between him and Jinx:

His mind had kept straying back to the girl with whiskey-colored eyes and a shitload of issues. He’d never met anyone as fucked up as she was, and for some damn reason, he was drawn to her.

He busied himself filling popcorn bowls and setting up the bar. Thinking about work was better than thinking about feelings. And pixies. Work made sense. Feelings and pixies were a mystery.

Not once did Jinx glance toward the bar as she embraced Ava and then Derrick–or rather, they embraced her. She stood ramrod straight, giving Ava an awkward pat on the back. Hell, no wonder he was attracted to her. She was as ill at ease with relationships as he was. It was pure physics. Like attracts like.

Nancee Cain has an in-depth understanding of addiction and recovery, like when formerly suppressed emotions surface once the addictive behaviors stop:

She bit her lip to keep from crying. And hated herself for being so emotional. Not numbing her problems with alcohol had flipped the switch on her inner crybaby. He was going to leave. Not that she could blame him. Her problems were too difficult to deal with, or she herself was . . . Her parents had told her that often enough.

The title of this story reminds me of the Madonna Reinvention Tour, which was so bad that some concert-goers renamed it “The Refund Tour”. You will not want a refund after you buy this book, I’ll tell you!

View all my reviews

During the day, Nancee works as a counselor/nurse in the field of addiction to support her coffee and reading habit. Nights are spent writing paranormal and contemporary romances with a serrated edge. Authors are her rock stars, and she’s been known to stalk a few for an autograph, but not in a scary, Stephen King way. Her husband swears her To-Be-Read list on her e-reader qualifies her as a certifiable book hoarder. Always looking to try something new, she dreams of being an extra in a Bollywood film, or a tattoo artist. (Her lack of rhythm and artistic ability may put a damper on both of these dreams.)

I was immediately drawn into this book and felt like I was there in New Orleans with Delaney and Valentine King. In the beginning, you can’t help to wonder what secret Delaney has hidden and what secrets Voodoo has hidden. Season Vining takes you on an adventure that you won’t want to end.”-Goodreads review

“King Me will keep you on the edge of your seat, and leave you wanting more. Add this to your TBRs, and you’ll definitely want to preorder this one. It’s not to be missed.-Goodreads review

Delaney Mills is haunted by darkness. Not of a spiritual kind, but a terrible past that all the rum in the world cannot chase away. Enter Valentine King, a sexy and irresistible man with connections to the world of Voodoo—a world that Delaney is desperately trying to break into.
Chicago-native Delaney follows her dissertation research all the way to the streets of New Orleans. With King’s help, she uncovers a covert group called the Bondye Saints. The group wants to remain a secret and will do whatever it takes to keep the two quiet. But threats and attacks on her life don’t deter Delaney’s desire to expose the Saints’ sins.
While she’s willing to risk her own life, Delaney hates that the one man who can chase away her darkness is put in danger. But Valentine King refuses to let her go. Because in his world built on faith, Delaney Mills is the one thing he believes in.

Season Vining grew up in southern Louisiana where food, culture, and family mean everything. She has lived in Houston, San Diego, and NYC—all of them providing tons of writing material. She is a graphic designer by day, and her obsessions include live music, tattooed bad boys, vintage cars, and people who know the difference between their, there, and they’re.
