Kristie Cook: New Adult Authors Promo

When Life Falls to Pieces, Answers Lie in the Space Between.

Leni Drago can’t make a smart decision on her own, according to her mother anyway–the few times she’s tried resulted in disaster. When her uncle sends her on a dance tour in Italy to find her real self, she returns to an empty home and any evidence of his existence wiped out. Then things get even stranger, like the mysterious appearances of Jeric Winters–inked, pierced and a hit-’em-and-quit-’em type. He’s one decision that should be easy for Leni. Or is he?

Jeric doesn’t do girlfriends. Unless they’re someone else’s. He left the fighting cage and modeling for a reason, and girls who want more than a night of fun are distractions he doesn’t need. Especially when they come with as much baggage as Leni carries. But he can’t shake the gut feeling that he needs to know her. All of her.

To discover the truth behind their connection and their ties to a journal from 1989, they must face painful secrets from their pasts. And they must do so quickly because their own existences are falling to pieces.

This first part of The Book of Phoenix takes you on a heart-wrenching ride as you discover the answers that lie in The Space Between.

Kristie Cook is a lifelong, award-winning writer in various genres, from marketing communications to fantasy fiction. She continues to write the Soul Savers Series, a New Adult paranormal romance / contemporary fantasy, with Promise, Purpose, Devotion, Power, and the latest release, Wrath, book five, available now. She’s also written a companion novella, Genesis: A Soul Savers Novella, which details the compelling history of her Soul Savers mythology. Over 250,000 Soul Savers books have been sold, with Promise peaking at #54 on the Amazon Top 100 Paid list and at #1 in the Amazon Fantasy category.

The Space Between, consistently one of the top rated New Adult books on Amazon, kicks off her second New Adult paranormal series, The Book of Phoenix.

Besides writing, Kristie enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and riding on the back of a motorcycle. She has lived in ten states, but currently calls Southwest Florida home with her husband, three sons, a beagle, and a juggle.

#Review and #Giveaway: Chasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman

Chasing HopeChasing Hope by Kathryn Cushman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Inspiring and Corny

When I saw the blurb for this new release, I loved the NA/YA sports angle and signed up to review it on my blog. This is a poignant story demonstrating the adage “When God closes a door, He opens a window.”

Sabrina is a college senior whose dream to run for Team USA in the Olympics fell short due to an autoimmune illness attacking her body. She is bitter about her loss, and angry with God for crashing her vaunted goal of becoming a missionary who spreads God’s word based on her running success.

Sabrina lives with her grandmother, who seems to disapprove of Sabrina’s revised plan to begin a competitive business internship. But Sabrina doesn’t want to hear it and continues with her busy life of classes and work, despite feeling tired and sick most of the time.

They encounter a family friend whose teenaged grand-daughter Brandy has fallen in with the wrong crowd. Brandy gets arrested for using drugs, and the only way for her to avoid juvenile detention is for Sabrina to coach her as a runner. Sabrina’s not thrilled about working with this sullen, disrespectful teenager, but reluctantly agrees to help out her grandmother and her friend. Coaching Brandy brings on nightmares of races Sabrina no longer can run.

Brandy has natural talent but doesn’t seem to care about using it. Sabrina would give anything to run again. It’s a fiery mix of personalities that keeps the story interesting.

I haven’t read many Christian novels, so if this is your preferred genre then you may love this story. Overall I enjoyed it, but I did have some quibbles. At times I found the characterization cheesy. My biggest struggle was that the characters’ voices didn’t sound authentic for their age. I work with college students, and I can’t imagine them saying something like:

”Bless your heart, I’ll just bet she has.”

“Perhaps it is time for some new ones.”

“Sabrina Rice, would you do me the honor of accompanying me on a date this Saturday evening?”

I also found it difficult to understand why Sabrina felt so ashamed of her illness ending her running career. It was frustrating when she wouldn’t tell a potential boyfriend Koen about her background. I wonder if she felt shame because she believed God caused her illness for some reason. I disagree with that notion — my beliefs align more with the message of When Bad Things Happen to Good People : God can’t stop natural phenomena like gravity or disease, but God can be there for us to heal and recover.

ARCs are not polished copies but the formatting was so jumbled that I had difficulty following who was speaking at times. And for some reason all the “ff”s were deleted, which was off-putting, or o-putting.

I do have a fondness for Brandy’s grandmother, who was there for her no matter what. Despite some aspects I didn’t enjoy, this story did bring tears to my eyes a few times — a sign of a good read, in my opinion.

Author Celebration! #IWSG

While all of us get mired in insecurities now and then, I think there’s a lot to celebrate about being an author, like NEW RELEASES.

Our own Ninja Captain and creator of IWSG Alex J. Cavanaugh launched book three in his Cassa series: Cassa Storm!

We’re proud of him for finishing his first series–what an accomplishment. Buy it HERE.

I love how my pub sister Nicki Elson challenges herself with new writing projects, like this zombie fairytale Hans & Greta, coming soon! Great job, Nicki.

Another talented pub sister Carol Oates designed that creepy cover. Well done, Carol!

Finally, I read a wonderful author blog post last month that I wanted to link to for the Insecure Writers Support Group, but alas, I can’t find it now. The gist of the message was that your book might not be a best-seller…it might not receive critical acclaim…but it is YOUR story, and therefore it is important.

We write books the way only we know how — each novel is a unique creation to celebrate. Sometimes we get wrapped up in comparing ourselves to others, instead of appreciating our special author voice and the opportunity to share that story with the world.

Speaking of unique, Nicki, Carol, and I have our leading men engaged in a Book Boyfriend SMACKDOWN (don’t ask). If you have extra time *laughs* and want to vote for our guys, please hop over to Love Between the Sheets HERE.

On Best Behavior LAUNCH

The release of On Best Behavior (The Conduct Series #3) is HERE!

Julie from AToMR Tours hosts the book blast, and today’s stop is at Swept Away by Romance. Karla writes an awesome review, and there’s a giveaway of the entire series.

Here’s the video trailer of On Best Behavior:

Planning a wedding is never easy—especially when the Russian Mafia wants you dead.

On Best Behavior—the third and final book in The Conduct Series—finds our favorite couple moving forward, despite the odds. Following a pardon by the Governor of Illinois, ex-cons Sophie Taylor and Grant Madsen are finally free to pursue their love and the life that lies ahead for them. Grant now fights the forces that have hurt his loved ones by working undercover for the FBI, and he has infiltrated the Russian Mafia in Chicago. Sophie dives into swimming with Grant’s nephew, Ben, and into her career as a psychology professor. Thankfully, now it’s Ben’s turn to heal through therapy sessions with Dr. Hunter Hayes.

With so many things going right for Grant and Sophie, it’s too bad the Russians aren’t their only threat. When Grant’s father, Enzo Barberi, discovers his own son thwarted his plan to break out of prison, his overdeveloped sense of vengeance flares to life. As Sophie scrambles to save her fiancé, it’s impossible to say who will kill Grant first—the Russians or his Italian family. Can love triumph over evil? Are hard work and a pledge to be on best behavior ever enough?

Once again, author Jennifer Lane brings a harrowing tale of romantic suspense with a psychological twist, and it’s sure to leave readers breathless.

Deleted Scene: On Best Behavior

Only four more days until release day of On Best Behavior! It’s exciting to finish my first series.

Earlier I posted the first part of a scene that we cut in the editing process. Here’s part two of Sophie and Grant in the church, planning their wedding:

“You know what I was thinking about during our little moment of silence?” Grant asked.

Sophie shook her head.

“Well, I imagined you in your wedding dress, at the end of the aisle.” He gestured toward the altar. “I’m standing right there waiting for you, fidgeting with the flower on my lapel, and when I see you, you look so stunning. Radiant and exquisite.”

She glanced at the entrance of the sanctuary and then back at him. “Mmm, I can see it too. You’re standing by Pastor Tom, looking so McSailoricious in a tux. I want to tear down the aisle, run into your arms.”

He continued the little fantasy. “You try to run, but…your father, he slows you down. He walks you to me—” he flinched as if watching a horror flick “—but then he won’t let you go. You tug on his arm, try to get away, but he’s got a vice grip on you, and he’s glaring at me—”

“Nooo!” she cried, playfully pushing against his chest. “You’re cursing us. That could really happen, you know.”

Grant clasped her wrists and leaned in. “I won’t let that happen, Bonnie, even if I have to wrestle you away from your father.”

“Good, don’t freak me out like that.”

He drew her hand up to his lips and planted a kiss on her knuckles.

Sophie gazed off in the distance, remembering what she’d read in one of her textbooks about the symbolism of the father giving the daughter away at a wedding. When the bride moved from her father to her husband, she transferred her allegiance from her family to her husband. In successful marriages, the wife had to put her husband first, ahead of her family, and the husband had to put the wife first too. If a conflict erupted between the spouse and the family, the spouse’s needs won in a healthy marriage.

When Sophie explained the symbolism to Grant, he said, “Interesting. I thought it was more like the father saying ‘Take her off my hands, please.’”

Her mouth popped open with umbrage.

He smiled. “Seriously, I do like that explanation from your psychology book.”

“Of course you do,” she replied with a grin, “’cause that means I’ll be yours.”

He leaned in, brushing his lips on her neck, sweeping soft kisses up her chin and jaw until his lips landed on hers. Their kiss was sweet and gentle, and she gazed into his glittering eyes.

“I’ll tell you a secret, Grant. We don’t need a wedding ceremony for me to transfer my allegiance—I already belong to you.”

“And I to you, Sophie.”

Enter to WIN a print copy of On Best Behavior (The Conduct Series #3) HERE.
