Romance with a Psychological Twist
While all of us get mired in insecurities now and then, I think there’s a lot to celebrate about being an author, like NEW RELEASES.
Our own Ninja Captain and creator of IWSG Alex J. Cavanaugh launched book three in his Cassa series: Cassa Storm!
We’re proud of him for finishing his first series–what an accomplishment. Buy it HERE.
I love how my pub sister Nicki Elson challenges herself with new writing projects, like this zombie fairytale Hans & Greta, coming soon! Great job, Nicki.
Another talented pub sister Carol Oates designed that creepy cover. Well done, Carol!
Finally, I read a wonderful author blog post last month that I wanted to link to for the Insecure Writers Support Group, but alas, I can’t find it now. The gist of the message was that your book might not be a best-seller…it might not receive critical acclaim…but it is YOUR story, and therefore it is important.
We write books the way only we know how — each novel is a unique creation to celebrate. Sometimes we get wrapped up in comparing ourselves to others, instead of appreciating our special author voice and the opportunity to share that story with the world.
Speaking of unique, Nicki, Carol, and I have our leading men engaged in a Book Boyfriend SMACKDOWN (don’t ask). If you have extra time *laughs* and want to vote for our guys, please hop over to Love Between the Sheets HERE.
It’s wonderful to have Dawn Pendleton on the blog today. She has organized the New Adult Authors Fall Promo and I truly appreciate all her hard work.
Dawn Pendleton is a new adult author currently residing in New England with her husband and their pup, though she has immediate plans to move to Georgia and promptly become a Southern Belle. When she isn’t staring at a blank page, willing the words to jump from her head to the screen, she’s usually playing on her iPhone, reading a book, or taking pictures with her fancy camera (which she has no idea how to use).
Her newest release, the first novella in the Best Friends Forever Series, was an idea that occurred to her back in February, when she first started writing. She wasn’t at a place where she could write them, though, so she started her Broken Series, instead. Through this past Summer, the BFF series emerged in her head, taking more space until she finally had to let them out. Liar, Liar, the first episode in the series, released this past Tuesday and is free on all retailers except Amazon.
Isn’t this cover adorable? 🙂
Hazel is a freshman at Coastal Carolina and looking forward to making new friends. When she meets Roman, she’s head over heels for him. There’s one problem, though: he’s still hung up on Hazel’s roommate, Cheyanne. But Cheyanne has a secret, one that has the potential to ruin her life in college. When Hazel learns the secret, she’s determined to use it against Cheyanne to win over Roman. She never imagines her plan could backfire, leaving her as a pariah among her new circle of friends.
The BFF series follows the lives of new adults, Hazel, Miranda, Cheyanne, Destiny, Audric, Nolan, Andre, and Roman. Follow their stories as the first season of novellas are released once a week from September to March.

I love to read and write books that make me FEEL. Spunky, smart women, and tortured, sensuous men who get themselves into all sort of trouble. I write romantic suspense for young adults, new adults, and adults:

I almost missed ANOTHER month of the IWSG! But I’m posting during a break in psychotherapy clients.
Thank you to Ninja Alex for developing this supportive author meme.
I’ve been embroiled in some good stuff with my psychologist career lately, so writing/blogging has taken a back seat. My fourth novel has been under contract for a while with Omnific Publishing, and I can’t wait to start with the edits. I finally started writing my next novel — a New Adult romance with sports and politics — but I only have about 500 words so far.
I could get really insecure about this hiatus in writing, saying things like:
“I should have started another novel by now.”
“The NA genre is hopping and I should strike while the iron’s hot.”
“Maybe I’m being lazy.”
But I don’t think these judgments will help anything. Instead, I’ll use the NONJUDGMENTALLY mindfulness skill. According to Marsha Linehan, Ph.D., the nonjudgmentally skill is:
* See but DON’T EVALUATE. Take a nonjudgmental stance. Just the facts. Focus on the “what”, not the “good” or “bad”, the “terrible” or “wonderful”, the “should” or “should not”.
* UNGLUE YOUR OPINIONS from the facts, from the “who, what, when, and where”.
* ACCEPT each moment (this doesn’t mean you like it or agree with it).
To practice this skill, I’ll examine the facts, like “I feel anxious that I’m not writing frequently right now” or “The psycho part of my psycho author career has needed more time recently”.
Have you experienced an ebb and flow in your own writing career? How do you deal with judgments and insecurity?
Danke to awesome author Nicki Elson for bestowing the Liebster Award upon me. LIEBSTER is a German word meaning sweetheart or beloved person. Nicki is indeed a LIebster!
I HOPE the Presidential election has been decided by the time this post goes live. The last thing we need in America is more hanging chads!
Today I want to talk about political beliefs and the extent to which you share them.
I live in Ohio, the state that COULD DECIDE THE ELECTION dun dun dun. I’d much rather frolic on the beach than listen to the endless political commercials.
But I am passionate about politics. I have strong opinions about who I want to win this election. Yet I stifle myself from sharing my political views in both careers as a psychologist and author (psycho author). Why?
1. Therapy is about the client, not the therapist. My political views don’t really matter. The only times I self-disclose are when those disclosures could benefit the client, and my opinion about politics probably isn’t central to our therapy goals. So I listen, nod with understanding, and sometimes *grr* inside.
2. Marketing my books is not about me spouting political beliefs, mostly because I don’t want to alienate half of my readership or author buddies. I believe our personal philosophies shine through in our work, but I don’t want to be too overt about it. Frankly, I’ve hidden quite a few Facebook friends who post their political agenda non-stop.
Thank goodness my swimming buddy Eric and I vent about politics all the time, or I’d explode!
Authors: How passionate are YOU about politics? To what extent do you share your views? Why?
And now to continue with “The Next Best Thing”. Author Darcia Helle challenged me to answer questions about my work in progress On Best Behavior (The Conduct Series #3).
* How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
I started writing On Best Behavior about a year ago and I’m still not done (though at 84,000 words I’m getting closer to the finish!) However, in the past year I completed a HUGE edit on my YA novel Streamline, which launched in March, 2012. I also tend to edit as I go, extending the first draft time-frame.
* What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
The genre is romantic suspense. I’ve received reader comments about how unique this series is, so it’s hard to compare it to other stories. Maybe the Black Ops, Inc. series by Cindy Gerard? But her heroes are more alpha than Grant Madsen. I don’t know many books featuring a psychologist heroine either. If you do, please tell me.
To those of you doing NaNo, best of luck to you! And to the rest of us, keep trucking.
