Rivals Giveaway, Happy 15 Years of the Insecure Writers Support Group, and Fave Character Archetype #IWSG

*sings* Did you remember…To post on the second of September? Welcome to this month’s Insecure Writers Support Group blog hop, started by the groovy Alex Cavanaugh.

Happy 15th Anniversary to the IWSG! What a motivational group that has kept me in the writing game long after the release of my debut novel in 2010. I’m full of gratitude to Alex and all the writers who keep this group going, including today’s co-hosts Kate Larkinsdale, SE White, JS Pailly, Olga Godim, and Natalie Aguirre!

To celebrate, we’re sharing links to our published works to support fellow writers. The best place to find my 10 novels and 2 novellas is my Amazon page. I have quite a few freebies listed in Kindle Unlimited:

Find Jennifer Lane books on Amazon

You can also find me on Goodreads, where I’ve written almost 600 reviews as an avid reader.

Speaking of Goodreads, I’m giving away 100 ebooks of RIVALS! The giveaway starts tomorrow (September 3) and lasts till the end of the month–just in time to read the sports romance between an Ohio State and Michigan coach before the big rivalry football game in November. Thanks to L. Diane Wolfe for formatting this book! Enter the giveaway HERE.

September 2 question – Do you have a favorite character archetype you tend to gravitate toward in your writing?

My obsession with the TV show Prison Break, particularly the character of Michael Scofield, started my writing adventure. Actor Wentworth Miller captivated me as he portrayed a poignant juxtaposition of vulnerability and strength. His brilliant character would do anything, including tattooing a full sleeve of the prison blueprints and committing his own crime to get thrown into prison, to save his wrongfully-accused brother from death row.

Since I started writing in 2007, that character archetype of wounded hero has stuck with me. Here’s a definition from scribophile.com:

The wounded hero archetype represents a character who has experienced significant trauma or suffering, which often drives their journey toward healing and redemption. This archetype highlights the struggle between their pain and the desire to help others, making them relatable and complex.

As a psychologist, I’m all about the character arc from trauma to redemption. I get to witness it every day! And I hope to bring that meaningful journey to the stories that I write.

  1. What a great idea to give away Rivals during football season! It’s awesome that you’ve continued writing and publishing stories since you were a debut author in 2010.

    1. Rida, YOU WERE BORN IN 2010? Thanks for the nod to how ancient I am hehe.

Oh yes, some of my favorite movies with wounded heroes are Donnie Brasco, Ordinary People, The Fugitive, The Prince of Tides (all before your time, likely), heck, even Top Gun. What are yours?

Do you have a blog? If so, please share your URL and I’ll visit.

  2. Definitely one of my favorites too — and PRISON BREAK! Ah, good memories.

Rivals sounds awesome! Once I finish with my book club books (tongue hanging out) I will have to grab a copy!

    1. A fellow Prison Break fan–yeah! How many seasons did you watch, Crystal? I couldn’t get enough of seasons one and two, then I was really disappointed with 3-5. I hear you on your free time being totally captured by book club reads. I’m part of 3 or so book clubs right now and have trouble keeping up.

I couldn’t post a comment on your blog (and another Blogger blog) for some reason, even after clearing the cache and cookies. I’ll keep trying, but if I’m not successful, I wondered which series you’ve been reading. I’ve read almost all of the Outlander books, and I think there’s one left. It’s great we’re both into the “tortured, brooding” hero!

  3. Low Water, you certainly achieved that – though intense swimming isn’t my world, off the scale stress certainly is –

Just been through yet more demands for every possible proof of my ID.. (ID fraud and most other varieties too)

I suppose one of my returning characters might qualify as a wounded hero..,

Just in time, knocking at the door was my new Kindle, …. Not left in a barn or handed to a passing sheep !

    1. How annoying about the ID checks, Esther. I am unable to comment on Blogger at the moment, grr. Who knows why. Hooray for a new Kindle! Thank you for the kind words about Low Water. I ordered East of the Sun, which has a lovely cover.

  4. Your profession gives you a lot of insight and material, just as being a nurse does for me. I just have to add some research to drop myself into the 1800s.

P.S. There are links to free books on my blog today.

  5. I love the wounded hero too, and that’s often my antagonist, which I’m talking about today. I think my special ed background–and having a front row seat to a lot of student trauma has probably influenced me a bit.

I snagged Behind the Catcher’s Mask, and I’m excited to dive in. Congrats on your new release! What perfect timing with football season!

    1. I can relate to having a front-row seat to trauma, which inspires us both to relate the inspirational stories we witness! Thank you for trying my short story. I bought Survival of the Fittest!
