Low Water Pre-Order #IWSG

Happy November, writers! Join us for the Insecure Writers Support Group, a monthly blog hop that’s the brainchild of Alex Cavanaugh.

I’m thrilled to co-host today along with my teammates Jenni Enzor, Renee Scattergood, Rebecca Douglass, Lynn Bradshaw, and Melissa Maygrove!

Today’s question: When you began writing, what did you imagine your life as a writer would be like? Were you right, or has this experience presented you with some surprises along the way?

I started on a lark with zero expectations about life as a “writer“. The word felt pretentious and unfamiliar to me. It was simply a delight to create fictional worlds shaped by my characters’ whims. The words poured out of me without much knowledge of structure or point-of-view.

Three years later, in 2010, when a small publisher took a chance on my debut novel, I experienced a mix of imposter syndrome along with incredible support from online friends, authors, and readers. I bounced from envisioning “best-seller” status to feeling like the heel of the shoe worn by those best-selling authors.

Surprises have ambushed me from quite a few corners, like:

  • Finding my own voice. I used to compare myself unfavorably to other authors, and sometimes I still do. But I heard somewhere that NOBODY writes like you do, and that sentiment has stuck with me. There aren’t many psychologists/ authors (psycho authors) out there, and probably none who share my obsession with swimming, volleyball, Pinterest food creations, and curse words!
  • I will survive if readers don’t like my books. Reading preferences are so subjective. I’ve found that writing is just like school, work, sports, and relationships in that I perform better by focusing on the process (writing what I want to write, learning the craft) instead of the outcome (reviews and sales).
  • I always knew I could persevere. Swimming thousands (millions?) of laps while staring at a black line on the pool bottom, as well as my neurotic need for achievement, strengthened my sense of grit. But I never predicted that I would publish ten novels!

Which brings me to my NEW RELEASE on 11/14/25: Low Water!

Cover by Coreen Montagna

Haunted by the past. Healing in the present. Hoping for a better future. And telling cringey dad jokes along the way.

I shared my blurb last month, and it’s available on Amazon as a pre-order. Have you ever felt hopeless about healing after tragic events? I used to. But then I learned a powerful treatment called cognitive processing therapy, and I want everyone with PTSD (real or fictional) to start the therapy, stat. CPT inspired me to return to writing after a three-year hiatus.

Two questions for you, writers:

  1. Would you be willing to publicize Low Water around the time of release day (Friday 11/14/25) on your blog or social media?
    • If you’d like a special blog post about trauma (sudden death, domestic violence, etc.), cognitive processing therapy for PTSD, writing about sports, or a topic of your choice, please leave your email address in a comment or email me at jenniferlanebooks at gmail.
    • If you want to share a social media post, here are options:

This insecure writer thanks you for stopping by!

  1. Congrats on the new release! I’d love a post on domestic violence. You have my email 🙂

Your PDF has to be in the required size already if you want to publish on D2D print. So, use the KDP print template for the size you want, format your book therein (save as) and then turn it into a PDF (save as PDF) then upload to D2D.

    I hope that helps 🙂

    1. Thank you for the help, Ronel. We realized we had the wrong size interior, gah. I can finally order author copies on Amazon now that it’s fixed!

I’ll work on a post about the cycle of violence that helps explain why women stay longer than they want in abusive relationships. 😦

    1. Thank you for all your hard work with IWSG over the years, Alex–who knows if I would’ve written my new release without the support of this awesome group. I haven’t gotten around to an IWSG post about trauma, but I hope to one day now that I’ve finished my book.

  2. Hi,

I understand about your surprises. I had a lot of them and still do but not as often.

I believe you have my email address. I would love to share one of your posts on my social media. Two Lives…or One chance to rediscover hope.

    All the best.

    1. That’s true about surprises declining as we gain more writing experience. Hopefully we won’t feel so unsurprised in the future that we become jaded, ha. I appreciate your support, Pat! I just realized that I can see commenters’ email addresses on my wordpress site.

  3. I’ve never had a problem if people don’t like my stories either. There are a lot of stories I don’t like. My problem is the people who think that you’re a bad writer because they didn’t like your story. You can dislike a story written by great authors. I’ve even disliked stories from some of my favourite authors. It just really depends on the story (and I’m a bit picky).

Congrats on your upcoming new release! Hope it goes well.

    1. So true, Renee. There are many books I don’t like either, sometimes for random reasons the author could never anticipate. And it’s rare for me to love EVERY book even by my favorite authors. Thank you for co-hosting and for the positive vibes! 😀

  4. Thanks for co-hosting, Congrats on your new book. Count me in, for promotion, if I can do anything.

Trauma ? Currently re-reading The Devil You Know. Dr Gwen Adshead and her Reith lectures on violence.

Absolutely no personal details, but I know the territory, probably too well.

    1. Thanks for the help and the book recommendation, Esther! I hadn’t heard of The Devil You Know, but it looks interesting (and maybe chilling). We humans can indeed be a mix of cruelty and compassion. Though I rarely read nonfiction, I also enjoyed The Body Keeps the Score.

  5. Thanks for co-hosting today. Congrats on your book release. I could share about it in my Follower News on 11/17/2025. Email me if you’re interested. And yes, swimming helps develop perseverance, which you also need for writing.

  6. Focus on the process. Excellent advice! I’d be happy to help however I can, all but with the formatting. Email me whatever you’d like me to share, on blog or social media. My email address is elizabethseckman(at)ymail(dot)com

I think all writers need to print this out and post it near their keyboard. Maybe add: It’s impossible to please everyone, so don’t try.

Congrats on the upcoming release! Your psychology training must give you incredible insight when you write.

    1. I sure have tried to please everyone in the past, Melissa. This new release is very therapy-heavy–it’ll be interesting to see the response. Thanks for co-hosting and stopping by!

  8. Focus on the process is such great advice, because the process is the only part you have full control over.

I’m so glad you were able to find healing, and your new book sounds interesting. Good luck with the release!

    1. Hi, Janet, I hope the process goes well for both of us. I’ve been fortunate not to endure a big T Trauma a la PTSD, but I have witnessed many clients heal from PTSD with the powerful CPT treatment. Thanks for the positive wishes! I enjoy your humorous posts.

As for your other questions, I’m hoping to find out! I released my first indie book (they’ve all been small press traditionally published up to now) in October and am working on three more for spring. I’m going wide because I don’t trust Amazon to be a good business partner and I don’t want to be beholden to them.

    1. Thank you, Samantha. I considered Jennifer Bryant as my pen name, but I went with Lane since it’s similar to my middle name and represents a swimming lane. I was in your shoes in 2014 after 4 novels released by a small publisher, and I’ve been pleased by self-publishing since. I love the creative control. I think it might be a genre thing in terms of enrolling in KDP Select–I heard one romance author say that romance readers consume sometimes one book a DAY and can’t afford to buy ebooks if they’re not in KU. My new release has only a little romance, so I might try wide for this one.

  10. Yippee! Congrats on book 10! I’m not the most active online anymore — chasing other big things, but I am so excited for you! I will have to grab a copy after the release!

  11. Hi, Jennifer! Congratulations on your latest book. I’d be happy to give you a shout out on November 14th post. Also, I’m doing an IWSG Facebook post on New & Promo this Friday. I’ll mention your book there. I have no clue about your second question. 😂. Thanks for co-hosting today. I hope you are having fun!

    1. I’m impressed by that CPT video, Lynn. Plus, white-board videos always hold my interest.

If you want to learn more about CPT, there’s a podcast called Ten Sessions that includes recordings of a woman’s experience with CPT.

  12. I got myself overbooked for the first Wednesday of the month so I’m not doing very well commenting on anyone else’s blog posts. Your blog post was the first to come into my email this morning and I’m just getting to it now. I like the example you shared about focusing on the process of writing, not the outcomes, and finding your own voice, you alone will write the way you write, no one else.

Thank you for sharing. I found it encouraging.

  13. Congratulations, Jennifer! All the things you learned really resonated with me, especially how swimming helped you preserve. I was a swimmer in high school and those long distance races sure built my muscle for pressing through difficulties.

  15. You can’t please everybody and that’s pretty much a proven fact. Especially where it comes to writing. And sticking with what you’re doing is key. Forge ahead and forget about the negativity.

  16. Congrats on your book and best of luck on launch day!

I publish wide because I don’t shop on Amazon myself. Once you get your wide accounts set up, it isn’t so intimidating. For D2D, I use their automatic print cover set up from the ebook cover and they format my interior files.

    1. Thanks, Allie! My designer and I realized I was using the wrong size file, so I’m hoping my second try will be more fruitful with D2D. But if not, I’ll use your suggestion with the ebook file. 🙂
