Happy New Year, writers! Join us for this supportive monthly group–sign up at Alex Cavanaugh’s blog.
You may have noticed I have a new website! It might also be evident that I’m just starting to spruce it up. Hopefully my blog will look prettier come next month.
Thanks to this month’s cohosts: T. Powell Coltrin, Victoria Marie Lees, Stephen Tremp, Renee Scattergood, and J.H. Moncrieff!
January 8 question – What started you on your writing journey? Was it a particular book, movie, story, or series? Was it a teacher/ coach/ spouse/friend/parent? Did you just “know” suddenly you wanted to write?
I enjoyed creative writing as a child, but it wasn’t until my 30’s when I became obsessed with the TV show, Prison Break. I scarfed down the entire first season before binge watching was a thing. Then I fell into writing fan fiction for the show, and I’ve been hooked on writing ever since. Wentworth Miller (yummy actor) was quite the inspiration!

I wrote fan fiction as well – but based on the Nancy Drew books, sadly no yummy actor to inspire me š

Wentworth Miller. *nods* That’s great inspiration. š Prisoner Break was a good show. I should watch it straight through. There was a lot I missed.

If you haven’t watched all of seasons one and two, Chrys, I think it’s definitely worth it to go back. Seasons three, four, and five pretty much suck. š

Ooh, Wentworth. Fanfiction is such a great thing – it lets us explore the writing thing in a less intimidating way – and the chapter-by-chapter feedback is so, so fun! I’m grateful to have you continue to do that for me as my crit partner on orignial works. š
The new site looks great!

Yes, it was all me who started the trend, Anna, LOL. Maybe that’s not a behavior that I want to set the trend for!

Wild! In this particular photo, he does a little bit, but I have never thought about the comparison before. He’s just so pretty. *sighs*

Fan fiction is so fun to write. I’ve never seen Prison Break but heard great things. I should check it out. Your new site looks great!

Prison Break season one is some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. The second episode is a little intense for those who get squeamish, but after that it’s a cliffhanger every episode and rather smart writing, in my opinion. Thanks, Julie!

I love hearing where everyone’s inspiration can from to start writing on their own! I’m a lot like you – totally film junkie and admirer of moving images. Those are what inspired me, plus a few books here and there HP. š I think it was after I first saw ET that I thought it would be so cool to have created that world and those characters. Never thought I’d actually be doing it.

I love that scene in E.T. when the mom is reading to little Drew Barrymore, and ET is listening in. So sweet! Sure, books inspire us, but movies/TV can evoke even more emotion. How awesome for us to be able to create worlds and characters!

Thanks for stopping by, Funny Blue! I agree that it’s enlightening hearing about all of the different ways we became writers. I’m having trouble commenting on Blogger from my MacBook for your blog and the IWSG blog, but I’ll try to remember to comment when I’m on my PC at work.
